What Do You Respect Yourself For Today?
MTYL Memo #15: Building a beautiful relationship between your actions and your self-respect.
Weeks ago, I came across a brief reference to this journal prompt on a stranger’s Substack, and it’s become a favorite part of my nightly reflection: “Today, I respect myself for…”
On the surface, it doesn’t sound much different than “Today, I’m proud of myself for…”
But it is. We’re often only proud of ourselves for results. Respecting ourselves for actions, though—that’s a different, happier story.
Try it for yourself, and see what you think.
You might respect yourself today for:
Leaving the party when you needed to.
Making time to make and eat a healthy breakfast.
Choosing to read a book over scrolling social.
Saying “No” to the meeting you suspected was optional (you were right).
Leaving your to-do list undone because you recognize what you really needed was a walk.
Cracking the door open on the app development you’ve been thinking about.
Every one of these starts with a decision you might not have felt like making. I know I didn’t :-)
But using this question to celebrate your choices builds a beautiful relationship between your self-respect and your decisions—not just the results.
I hope you have an awesome day today.

What a great prompt Emily (and Amanda!) And yes, it is different, deeper and richer than, I'm proud of myself for...I will be using it tonight during reflection time. Thank you both.
Love this! Implementing this tonight!
