Using Your Money to Create a Life You Love
MTYL Memo #4—for those creating more freedom, purpose & possibility.
You can’t out-earn or out-spend a life you don’t like.
No amount of money earned, or spent on stuff, can compensate for a life you dread on the daily.
And we’re not just talking about having a super boring job, or a job with a terrible boss, or a wildly demanding job. You might be running a business you don’t like at all.
Or maybe your life is really “comfortable” but you feel like you’re meant to do more. Like you’re actually meant to do something with the talents you already know you have, and do something different to discover ones you haven’t yet discovered.
You start to shift this whole situation by: a) making the most of what you’re earning by b) proactively and thoroughly organizing your spending toward c) creating the life you’ve always imagined.
Practical tip:
Audit your spending—for real. Only when you see your spending for what it really is, and make peace with it, can you choose to make changes.
Write down on a piece of paper or in a spreadsheet all your spending categories, and how much you spend on an average monthly basis. This includes the “gotcha” categories I see people ignore or underestimate regularly: clothing, personal care, all the types of dining out, entertainment, food & takeout, pet expenses, annual/sporadic expenses, and gifts.
Use a spreadsheet to create hypothetical, realistic spending plans.
Use a budgeting tool (YNAB is my favorite) to proactively organize your money and track your spending.
If you’re looking for more help, my book, Dear Fellow Spender, walks you through this in much greater detail.
Let’s make today a great day.
