I know at least one reader is making the decision of whether to continue staying in a “safe” job, or to take a flying leap out on her own.
Here are a couple questions for her—anyone else considering a move—to consider:
What are you waiting for? I highly recommend actually answering that question, as specifically as possible.
“What would you be doing instead?”
I raised that last question in a column several months ago. It’s Jerry Seinfeld giving advice to another comedian who felt like he was running out of time to make his dream fly, and regretting all the time he’d spent trying to make it work.
But you might also use it to positively imagine what this move might make possible for you.
What could you be doing with your days instead of what you’re currently doing?
Even if the move feels risky, would you feel more alive?
Would you have more of a chance of helping people in the ways you feel called to do?
Could you make significantly more money if that’s part of creating the life you imagine?
We don’t get guarantees that it all works out like we hope. And that’s why most people choose to stay safe—until something forces them out of what’s become a too-small nest and they realize that they do, in fact, know how to fly.
I don’t know about you, but I always wanted that to be my decision—not someone else’s.
If you’re waiting to get firmer ground under you before you jump, I applaud that. It helps infinitely to be out of debt, have a healthy savings account, and trust yourself with managing money and time before you leap.
But if you’ve done that, and are waiting to know it all works out, this might be the permission slip you’ve needed to fly, baby, fly.
It may not work out exactly like you think it will, but somehow, it eventually works out even better than you imagine.

This is so good! I love that you straddle the position between waiting for too much security and throwing it all to the wind and bailing with no safety net. In reality, we have to eat but we also want to follow our dreams!
This one spoke to my soul! Thanks Emily. Wonderful sage advice, as usual. ❤️
