Welcome to More to Your Life. Start here!
I'm Emily, a writer and self-proclaimed explorer very interested in learning lots, finding the funny, and taking risks to really live. Join me!
On October 31, 2023, I wrote these words in one of the six “Jimmy Books” I filled over the course of two years of travel and exploration:
I AM A WRITER. NOW WHAT?
This about sums up my leaving-corporate-to-build-something-of-my–own journey. Important realizations, and lots of questions. I planned to grow my financial coaching empire but ended up traveling and writing my way out of coaching and into being a writer with a cool job.
What I write about
Oh, all kinds of things. Because this is basically a column about what makes life cool and people interesting, everything we humans experience is fair game, and I’m always surprised by how well the most random posts go over with readers. Like this one about tipping culture and this one about unfortunate names.
Things I like to write about:
Work: Jobs we uniquely find cool vs ladder-climbing, HR drama, employee empowerment. I’ve worked in commercial real estate, regulatory affairs, tech web development & marketing, been a balloon animal “artist” (quotes are necessary), and more if you can believe it.
Creativity: ‘nuff said.
Dating stories: Still solo in my 40s while still wanting a husband and family, I have loads of stories to share
Travel, cool places, and cool people: Two years of wandering intentionally through Europe and the U.S. has given me miles of material
History, inventors, freedom, self-reliance, AI…
If it’s about a rich/cool life or interesting people, it’s fair game.
What you can expect
You will receive 1-2 columns per week. I send columns on Tuesdays and Fridays (but not necessarily every Tuesday and Friday). The columns contain lots of stories, a fair bit of self-deprecating humor, and “curiously important” thoughts about stuff all humans can relate to. (A reader shared that bit about “curiously important” and I was delighted).
More to Your Life is meant to be a welcome friend in your inbox, as opposed to the bossy neighbor telling you what to do, what to buy, or how exactly to live your life. It’s conversational, and sometimes funny.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but gosh do I love writing about the journey, what I’ve learned, and am thinking about along the way. And sharing all of it with others who “get” it—and who want more of those days where you feel so dang alive.
If what I’m writing about here at More to Your Life sounds like your cup of tea, I’d love to have you.
