Team Focus vs. Team Distraction
MTYL Memo #24: A sticky note, a simple game, and a lot more focus.
I’m not proud of the fact that digital distractions still get to me, given how much I care about my craft and about being intentional. But such is our age.
When you work on a computer or hold a smartphone, The Internets are just a mouse-click away. And with a brain processing thousands of thoughts per day—thoughts ranging from the ridiculous to the profound—it’s easy to act on those impulses that feel so quick or important.
But if you’re going to make your intentional life—and your dreams—happen, you need to help yourself focus.
Here’s an ultra-low-tech game I play to remind me that I’m working on something worth my attention.
Using a sticky note or a scratch piece of paper, write “Team Focus” and “Team Distraction.” Each time you’re this close to losing your focus to chase a dopamine hit—but you resist—Team Focus gets a point.
Sometimes you cave, and Team Distraction gets the point.
It’s a simple act of reward and accountability that builds the muscle of focus.
You might be surprised how well it works. Try it and let me know what you think!

What a great idea Emily! I like the fact that this tip recognizes that there will be distractions and that fighting every little one is a sort of act of rebellion against the forces! And recognizing these little wins is important instead of just that you got the thing done or not.
