Wow- our grandparents were likely radically different but I saw so much of my summers in your reminiscing! Ours lived outside of Sacramento, their TV actually included cable (which was the coolest thing EVER to us poor network TV kids), and treats included storebought bear claws, nuked in the microwave for just a few seconds and topped with a slab of butter. So, say what you will about hydrogenated fats but my grandma is still going strong at 96... ;)
I loved reading some of your grandparent reminiscing, and am happy that you poor network TV kids got some quality cable in ;) Your bearclaw tradition (and the fact that donuts or "sweet rolls" as my Grandma called them were a feature of many of our Sunshine breakfasts) makes me think that grandparents everywhere should take note—TV + pastries = a lifetime of grandchild nostalgia.
I felt like I was right there with you guys, visiting your grandparents. I loved all the details in this story! I pictured the station wagon from the movie "Vacation" with your description of your family car. Love it!

Thanks so much for reading; I'm glad you enjoyed it! And lol about the Vacation station wagon similarities...both had *gorgeous* wood paneling ;)
My mother-in-law is from SD and my husband often talks about it just like you. Will share this with him. Thanks Emily!
What a fun point of connection! It makes me glad to know that your husband "gets" the SD nostalgia.
