An Unexpected Valentine's Day in Porto

On Valentine’s Day 2023, I was on a day tour exploring sites around Porto, Portugal. Tour groups are always interesting, because you never know who your “Friends for the Day” will be. And yet, it always works out famously.
On said tour, I became friends with a fellow American solo traveler. As we explored and talked, I learned she was going through a divorce and embarking on a new chapter of her life.
We talked about dating, solo life, and business. We found the fanciest chocolate shop we could and bought ourselves chocolates, and laughed over all the pastries we found and ate at our various stops. You know what they say, when in Portugal…
At the end of the day, I returned to my hotel, and found a single-stem rose and chocolates waiting on my neatly-made bed. Such a small gesture from the staff meant a lot—the cherry on top of an already fabulous Valentine’s Day.

You meet the loveliest people and can have the loveliest experiences when you leave your comfort zone.
We really are able to make life better for each other, and for ourselves, with only a little effort.
