I was at the family annual dinner many years ago in the mountain valley of Oneida, Tennessee by Buffalo Crik (We don't have creeks). We were all sitting around the supper table (not dinner. That's lunch) when my Aunt Mary (middle name 'Christmas' because she was born December 25th) said, "You wouldn't believe what I saw at Walmart yesterday".

Me: "What did you see?"

Mary: "A bear! Can you believe that? A bear at Walmart!".

Me: "I don't know. Seems normal to me. Everyone knows Walmart has the best prices".

She choked on her roast beef.

Ha! Really enjoyed this story from a different part of the country and of your family.

I typically don’t think names should be clever, but will happily make an exception for Mary Christmas

This is all terrifying - a girl from Brooklyn.

It terrifies me too, I guess I'm just more desensitized to bear talk ;-)

The bit about adding a “blurry finger” to your trail photos made me chuckle out loud. Hike safe!

Success with a chuckle out loud! I'm glad someone caught and appreciated that bit.

This is one hilarious post. I'm glad you survived the hike. My husband lived in Alaska for many years and has a number of bear stories of his own, fortunately none of them involving bites taken out of his body!

Thanks so much for enjoying it and for being glad I survived. Has your husband had some close calls with bears in his time in Alaska?? I’m glad he’s also never had a bite taken out of his body!

I read about a guy who in the same year was attacked by a bear, a shark, and a rattlesnake and lived. When asked about he said, I don't know if I'm the luckiest person in the world or the unluckiest."
